The leadership landscape is constantly evolving. Almost every month it seems there are calls for a new leadership – principle-centred, spiritual, servant, transformational, breakthrough, authentic and so on. The call is getting louder as organisations struggle with the leadership challenges that ambiguity, unpredictability, speed of change and globalisation bring.

This new leadership requires qualities that cannot be learned by the traditional approaches to development. For example, when 1,500 managers were asked by the Institute of Management to identify the leadership characteristic they most required from their leaders, the top response was ‘inspiration’ with 55% of managers giving this answer. However, only 11% thought that their leaders displayed it.

This survey went on to look at 14 different approaches to leadership development and found “none of the leadership development methods are positively associated with inspiring leadership”.
